The World Championships were under threat from even existing this year, following the global pandemic. However, after consulting with various health organisations and national authorities, it was announced that League of Legends will take place in Shanghai, as players will form a bubble to be able to compete offline. With games being held at the Pudong Football Stadium, the arena's first-ever event as it is currently still under construction, we now know that the games will span for around five weeks.

So far, teams are beginning to fill out the spots for both the group stages and play in rounds, as Top Esports and JD have all-but-confirmed their place at Worlds via the LPL Summer event. As the top two teams at LPL Summer 2020, they will compete for their seeding in the playoffs on August 27, with the winner booking their ticket to Shanghai/ The loser will also be able to pack their bags, qualifying through the LPL Championship points, in which first place will be occupied by the winner, meaning second place will receive automatic qualification.

G2 Esports, Fnatic, and Rogue also have one foot on the plane, as the top four from the LEC Summer 2020 will qualify, with all three teams confirmed to be in the top four. MAD Lions could join them, although FC Shalke 04 Esports lie in their way, with the winner being the next team to confirm their places at Worlds. They will play on August 28, with the full seeding from the LEC confirmed on September 6.

As more team begin to qualify, places at the LoL worlds will quickly fill up. Now confirmed to be kicking off on September 25, the world championships are in touching distance.
