Video game movies are having a serious return to form, in a way that could put them on track to ditch their historically bad name.

The likes of Doom and Super Mario Bros. did more than enough to turn the general movie-goer off of video games on the big screen entirely, but recent years have brought them back swinging. Uncharted, Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequel, Mortal Kombat - the video game is beginning to shed its associated atrocity at the box office, and audiences are actually showing up for them again.

And now, despite John Wick's connection to another video game movie, another of the film's team is tackling a brand-new video game movie. And it's very '90s.

Adding to the growing list of John Wick alumni getting stuck into video games, the film series' creator is set to tackle the '90s classic beat-em-up Streets of Rage for its very own film adaptation.

Deadline has reported that Derek Colstad is currently set to pen the film, following his writing talents on the Bob Odenkirk-led Nobody.

The SEGA property seems to be making good use of the massive success that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has enjoyed at the box office, especially as the film will be produced by its production company, dj2 Entertainment. The company is also set to produce an adaptation of It Takes Two, with a decision on whether it'll be a film or series still yet to come.

John Wick's Director Is Making The Ghost Of Tsushima Movie

As it turns out, Colstad is the second of the John Wick team to jump on a video game movie - as the series' director, Chad Stahelski, is the director of the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie.

The film has just hired Takashi Doscher, the writer behind films Still and Only, to pen the story, and to bring Jin's story to the big screen with Stahelski - so it could be shaping up to be something special.

Both films seem like they could be turning out yet more brilliant video game movies - and maybe, their terrible reputation could be coming to an end with their arrival. It's about time.
