Our hopes of a new-gen GoldenEye 007 have taken a Golden Gun to the head, as an industry insider claims real-world events might've put the much-hyped revamp on ice. Even though IO Interactive is moving ahead with the mysterious Project 007, it sounds like we'll be waiting a while to get our fix of the suave British spy.

Look, there have been some great James Bond games and some abysmal ones. While the likes of 007 Legends and Goldeneye: Rogue Agent had us pining for the lauded days of Nightfire and Agent Under Fire, it's universally accepted that 1997's GoldenEye 007 is one of the greatest games of all time. So, *puts on Judi Dench M voice*, where's our bloody remake?

What's Going On With The GoldenEye 007 Remake?

Unless you're new here, you'll know a glossy remake dragging 007 onto new-gen consoles has been touted for a while. Way back when, Microsoft had been working on a HD remake for Xbox 360, but just months away from release, Nintendo, Microsoft, and original developer Rare had an almighty rights war. Instead, we were left with Eurocom's GoldenEye 007 in 2010, which was more of a modern reimagining.

For those wanting a straight-up remake of classic GoldenEye 007, you're fresh out of martinis. When industry insider Jeff Grubb was grilled on where the long-rumoured remake is, the man himself responded on Twitter. Although admitting he wasn't sure what's going on, Grubb suggested the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine could've scuppered those plans.

Much like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has placed itself on indefinite holdGoldenEye 007's story doesn't exactly lend itself to a time when Russia has invaded Ukraine. The whole plot of GoldenEye 007 is about Bond taking on evil Russians and trying to bring down the Soviet Union, and although it's all fictional, the industry is handling anything set in this part of the world with kid gloves right now.

Will We Still Get A GoldenEye 007 Remake?

Sadly, each passing rumour makes it look less likely that we'll see James jump off that dam for a new generation. Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, we've seen the video game industry adjust its plans - with rumours Epic Games scrapped a whole war-themed season of Fortnite. Let's also remember no one has officially said anything about a GoldenEye 007 remake.

We were pretty sure GoldenEye 007 was about to make its return, thanks to some leaked Xbox trophies. Only last month, we reported the mythical remake was "weeks away" from being announced, and although Grubb's musings are all logical, it remains to be seen whether it's anything more than speculation. Even if a new-gen GoldenEye 007 is long overdue and would be a chart-topping winner, it's sometimes just a case of wrong place, wrong time.
