If you want to know why Kratos is always in such a bad mood and what makes that bearded brute tick, a new God of War comic hopes to fill in the gaps with the Ghost of Sparta's backstory. It isn't just the fact the Kratos is cold as he wanders around half-naked in the icy backdrop of Norse mythology. Nor is it the fact that he not only found a wife, but lost her during the gap between 2010's God of War III and 2018's God of War. It turns out that Kratos got up to a lot between killing Zeus and heading out with Atreus.

Although God of War III seemed to wrap up Kratos' story with a neat bow, the game gave an ominous tease, with a trail of blood suggesting he'd live to fight another day. There were more games with God of War: Ghost of Sparta and God of War: Ascension being prequels, however, the story of what happened after he toppled Olympus wouldn't be picked up for eight years. When we jumped into the award-winning 2018 game, there were questions about how Kratos ended up on the opposite side of the world. Now, consider some of these mysteries solved.

What is the God of War comic?

Back when God of War launched in 2018, Dark Horse Comics released a four-part series to explain how he came to have a son in the first place. Even though the addition of Atreus helped make the reboot one of the best games of all time, it was a massive shock to see the usually stoic and solo Kratos have to embrace a travelling partner - let alone one that was his own son. Now, God of War: Fallen God goes back even further and leads on from the aftermath of Zeus' grisly demise.

Dark Horse's official description reads: "After conquering Zeus and thwarting Athena, Kratos believes himself to be finally free from his bondage. He sets sail for the desert in an attempt to distance himself from his home and his shame only to find his rage and guilt follow close behind. Kratos rages against the one foe that has proven to be unconquerable—himself. But a war against oneself is unwinnable, and only invites madness". It's a pretty loose description, but will hopefully reveal what puts him on the path to the chilly climes of Norway.

IGN has the scoop with a preview of the first chapter. Here, we see Kratos still plagued by his curse of immortality as he tries to throw away his signature Blades of Chaos. We only see a few panels, but by the looks of it, he can't get ride of his past or the Blades of Chaos that easily. Fallen God also reunites previous God of War comic writer Chris Roberson and artist Tony Parker. With the new run, they're joined by colourist Dan Jackson, letterer John Roshell, and cover artist Dave Rapoza. The first issue is available now.

When God of War released, our return to Kratos' world was massively expanded with a tonne of tie-ins. As well as the first Dark Horse comic, there was an official novelisation, a recreation of Atreus' journal with God of War: Lore and Legends, and even a YouTube documentary. A God of War comic is all well and good, but where's the news on the next chapter? The sequel to  2018's God of War was announced at Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal event, however, there are worries God of War: Ragnarok won't release in 2021.

Game Director Cory Barlog teased that he wouldn't be offering an update at the recent PlayStation State of Play, and while some hoped he was trolling us, Ragnarok was absent from the already disappointing presentation. It might seem like an odd time to release a God of War comic, which could mean we're incredibly close to Ragnarok's arrival or Sony Interactive Entertainment is trying to distract us with a lack of news on where the sequel is up to. Even though Fallen God probably won't give anything away on what to expect from Ragnarok, at least we'll get to learn a little more about the god-smashing saviour.
