The greatest tragedies in the gaming space have a tendency to sit in one category: the unfinished sequel. Portal, Half-life, Knights of the Old Republic and even Day of the Tentacle - there are swathes of game series that have never followed through with a full sequel, leaving fans in the lurch as they hold out for closure.
Some of these games will never arrive, and no matter how hard it is to let go, we're just going to have to make peace with it. But players have latched onto a cult classic, and they're not resting until they see it back on the market.
Fans are desperate for a sequel to Alice: Madness Returns
Fans have taken to Reddit to share one of those incomplete series that has been bothering them for the longest time because it never saw the sequel it deserved. It's the Alice series spearheaded by American McGee.
The games began with American McGee’s Alice for Windows and MacOS in 2000, before graduating to its more popular sequel Alice: Madness Returns, developed by Spicy Horse and touching down on Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Over a decade later, fans are still calling for the trilogy to be brought to life.
"Absolutely GOATed game, would kill for a sequel or a remake," shared Reddit user u/TheAlmightyChanka, joined by a swathe of other players sharing their love for the game in the comments. Someone else said, "Someone at EA hates this franchise and has made sure its never getting anything new."
Even if Alice is gone, another suggested, "Maybe not this game exactly, but I hope the creators of Lies of P make a game in the Alice universe. I would imagine it to be similar to this game but more of a souls-like. I think they'd nail the grim art style." It's clear that players want more - but chances are, they're simply not going to get it.
America McGee: "Stop asking me questions about Alice"
Well, that takes care of that. It's no secret that America McGee has been wrought with frustrations in creating a third instalment in the Alice series, working on both Alice: Otherlands and Alice: Asylum in hopes of bringing the trilogy to a close, but EA has resisted the chance at each turn.
"The rights are very simple - EA owns Alice and they control it," McGee says on his Patreon. "I’d really love it if people could stop asking me questions about Alice in general."
It seems that Alice is destined to be a trilogy that never comes to a close, but hey, at least it ended on a high note with a game that has stood the test of time. Alice is dead, long live Alice.
