In a post-Elden Ring world, get ready to have your minds blown. While FromSoftware's fantasy epic is sure to cement itself in the history books as one of the greatest games of all time, we find ourselves asking whether it would be the same if it had been a PlayStation exclusive. Well, watch out for Elden Ring 2

While FromSoftware was once a relatively niche studio that was known for delivering gruelling titles where you die more times than you've had hot dinners, the likes of Bloodborne and Elden Ring have put it at the forefront of the action RPG genre. Has Elden Ring been the cherry on top that Sony needed to acquire FromSoftware?

Is FromSoftware Joining The Sony Family?

There's a lot to be said about the idea of Sony acquiring FromSoftware, and while it's sure to spark a fierce debate on both sides of the fence, some pretty big names think it's about to happen. Posting on Twitter, Dr. Serkan Toto claims Sony is eyeing FromSoftware for a merger and acquisition (M&A).

Toto isn't just your regular insider who throws out the odd claim or cryptic tease of "join my Twitter at 1am for a big announcement." As well as being a video game analyst, he's also the CEO of Tokyo-based game industry consultancy, Kantan Games. This gives Toto's musings a little more substance, but still, it's far from official.

Toto gives us a brief history of how FromSoftware got to where it is today, starting out as a B2B software developer in 1986, reminding us just how far the company has come. It wouldn't be until 2009, with the release of Dark Souls on the PlayStation 3 that the gaming community really began to pay attention. As for becoming a PlayStation-exclusive studio, Toto warns that the developer's early valuations are "unspeakable." Looks like Jim Ryan will have to head into the Sony overdraft for this one.

Should Sony Acquire FromSoftware?

This isn't the first we've heard of Sony taking the FromSoft reins, however, it was written off as an April Fools' joke when people found it hilarious to tweet about on April 1. Although FromSoftware has dabbled with various platforms - and released Elden Ring on most - it started with games like King's Field and Armored Core on PlayStation. There would be a sense of justice if FromSoftware returned to the bosom of the PS family. Now that we know Kojima is officially out for the count, everyone is dying to know who's next.

Acquisitions are everywhere right now, and after Microsoft made the seemingly Sony-crushing move of acquiring the troubled Activision Blizzard, some said it was game over. Sony responded by scooping former Xbox bae, Bungie, but it wasn't the same. If (emphasis on the if) Sony takes FromSoftware, it would undoubtedly be one of the biggest video game acquisitions of all time. It's also one that might leave Microsoft maidenless.
