Dark Souls 3 gets jaw-dropping Unreal Engine 5 remake

FromSoftware's Dark Souls 3 is a beautiful game, but a new Unreal Engine 5 remake shows what the developer is missing out on by not updating it.

While it's sad to admit, Dark Souls might have been preceded as the primary SoulsBorne title in FromSoftware's arsenal. Still, that doesn't mean that players aren't still fondly attached.

The series practically invented the gruelling gameplay loop that set FromSoftware up for its meteoric successes with the launch of Elden Ring, and it still has plenty of iconic moments, deaths, and bosses to topple for fans of the open-world masterwork.

If you haven't touched the game before, there's an excellent opportunity to take it for a spin for the first time. Of course, 2011's Dark Souls was just the start of the saga, with a whole trilogy of games coming out of the woodwork, as well as 2018's Dark Souls: Remastered.

Dark Souls 3 in Unreal Engine 5 is stunning

Seeing the potential of what FromSoft could do, a new tech demo shines a fresh light on the finale of the Dark Souls series - with all of the reflectiveness and splendour of Unreal Engine 5. Although a Dark Souls 3 remake is far from official, one fan has done the work for Hidetaka Miyazaki.

The game engine is undoubtedly one of the best tools for developers to create some truly stunning environments. YouTuber Jonx0r has proved that it doesn't have to be limited to new projects, as they've been sharing some incredible videos that show their attempts at bringing Dark Souls 3 to the engine.

The creator had already revealed some slick videos of combat with smaller enemies as well as the Iudex Gundyr, but they recently dropped jaws with a video showing off their version of Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, and it looks genuinely remarkable.

Can I play Dark Souls 3 in Unreal Engine 5?

Unfortunately, this project remains a simple visual demo, as the YouTuber has taken to the comments to express the difficulties of creating a full game, or even turning it into a source port.

"It's possible but it's an absolutely insane amount of work to accomplish alone or even with a small team," says Jonx0r about potentially turning the project into a source port. "For example, the player character alone has over 4000 separate animations."

Still, if you're compelled by the (unofficial) Dark Souls 3 remake, you can support the creator on Patreon. After all, we can't know what the future brings, and maybe a change of heart and an indie team could make it happen. After all, it worked for Bluepoint's Demon's Souls remake.
