Capcom Accused Of Locking Resident Evil 4 DLC Behind Paywall

Although Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake looks like one of 2023's biggest games, the developer is accused of locking its DLC content behind a paywall.

We're ravenous for Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake, and with less than 40 days to go, we're hungry for brains and bloodshed. While it looks to be a brilliant retelling of 2005's story, there are worries that the developer is simply seeing dollar signs in its eyes.

The GameCube classic has had more ports than we can count (okay, not as many as Skyrim), but with Leon S. Kennedy's trip to rural Spain getting a new-gen overhaul, it's never looked so good. We're on track for a bloody blockbuster, well, as long as Capcom doesn't lock the Resident Evil 4 DLC behind a paywall.

What's Going On With Resident Evil's Pricing?

Resident Evil 4 Deluxe Edition

Much like how the OG came with some tasty DLC content like the Ada Wong-centric Separate Ways, we're expecting big things on that front. Sadly, it could all be locked behind a pricy paywall.

Over on ResetEra, someone has spotted that the Xbox store has a listing for the Resident Evil 4 Treasure Map: Expansion - an add-on that comes with the game's Deluxe Edition. The description states, "Some of these treasures can only be obtained by this method."

The Deluxe Edition has bonuses that range from "deluxe weapons" to the original soundtrack from 2005, and different outfits for Ashley and Leon. Still, it'll take more than giving Leon a "Romantic" skin to get us parting with our money.

A $70 Digital Deluxe version isn't too extortionate by today's standards, and given that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has just been caught in its own scandal, we're a little tired of the pricing debate. Still, it has players questioning what'll happen to the rest of RE4's content.

Is The Resident Evil 4 DLC Behind A Paywall?

For those who want a nice physical copy for their collection, it's frustrating that anything is being imprisoned behind the doors of Ramon Salazar, it also has us worried for the DLC(s). Slapping an extra cost on Ada's story running concurrently with Leon's sounds like a pretty clever marketing plan.

As spotted by PC Gamer, the RE4 remake has 13 additional content packs. Even though each says they aren't available separately, that could change post-release.

There are also questions about what will happen to the fan-favourite Mercenaries mode. We currently have the abysmal Re:Verse that plays like a Mercenaries standalone, but just like 2021's Resident Evil Village added the mode, we're expecting it here.

We won't be losing any sleep about missing out on a few treasures if we don't want to pay for the privilege, but if Ada gets cast to the side again, we'll be angrier than Albert Wesker when he loses his sunglasses.
