Things are heating up in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as Activision has drawn its battle lines across the next entry in the long-running shooter franchise. Treyarch and Raven Software are putting their heads together for a trip down memory lane, so we suggest you brush up on your high school history classes.

As Black Ops Cold War races toward its November release date, there's been a slow leak of information on what's coming next. Alongside the return of the legendary Frank Woods and Zombies, the latest rumours hint at a reprieve for a fan-favourite killstreak feature. That's right, it looks like the RC-XD will be revving its engine into action for Cold War's multiplayer.

Activision is counting down to its big multiplayer reveal on September 9, while the various teasers have given the nod to what's on the way. After the first teaser showcased potential multiplayer map locations including the previously leaked Miami map and rumoured existence of a nautical locale in the middle of the ocean, the latest tease confirmed the return of the RC-XD. The Remote Controlled-Explosive Device was introduced way back when as part of the original Call of Duty: Black Ops in 2010.

The RC-XD was usually activated by a killstreak of three or four and gave the home team the chance to get behind the controls. You could then remotely pilot this C4-packed deathtrap behind enemy lines and blow them all to kingdom come. With Cold War being a direct sequel to the OG Black Ops, it makes sense the RC-XD is returned to its former glory

If the new RC-XD is anything like its former counterpart, expect it to feature heavily in multiplayer maps. The original ones were incredibly easy to come across and were one of the lowest killstreak rewards we've ever seen in a CoD title. Despite this, the RC-XD could pack one hell of a punch and deal damage on a par with a lethal grenade. More than this, Black Ops featured several shortcuts in maps that were designed specifically for the RC-XD. Basically, we're pretty chuffed it's back.

Of course, this isn't the first we've heard about the RC-XD's imminent arrival. When Activision first started promoting Call of Duty 2020, the complicated ARG reveal in Warzone Season 5 showed off schematics and a prototype RC-XD in the map. Infinity Ward might be handing over the reins to Treyarch for Cold War, but it's clear the two titles will be closely linked. Either way, you'd better start practising your RC car skills if you want to master the RC-XD's upgraded model.
