Somehow, Call Of Duty 2024 Could Come To Last-Gen

Despite the gaming world largely moving on from PS4 and Xbox One, Call of Duty 2024 is apparently coming to last-gen consoles.

It feels like we've already chalked off Modern Warfare 2 and have our eyes firmly fixated on the future of the Call of Duty franchise.

With Activision itself losing hope in the longevity of MW2 - adding last-minute plans for a spin-off premium release in 2023 - it's no surprise that we're hoping Treyarch can come to the rescue once the dust dies down from the Microsoft takeover deal.

But with many fans getting a glisten in their eyes when hearing Treyarch's rejection of a sped-up timeline in favour of releasing a full game in 2024, it seems there might be a reason that the Black Ops developers chose to wait another year to release their game.

Call of Duty 2024 Prepares For A Last-Gen Launch

According to leaks from Insider Gaming, Treyarch is planning to release Call of Duty 2024 to last-gen consoles, as well as new-gen and PC.

Although we should take the above with a pinch of salt, it suggests that documents obtained in the massive Activision data breach confirm that the Gulf War-based 2024 game (codenamed Cerberus) will be available for Xbox One and PS4 consoles.

Project Cerberus was reportedly found within the data breach that detailed the 2023 roadmap and the potential jet pack "Project Jupiter." Cerberus also ties into rumblings that Treyarch is going all-in on Zombies for its 2024 game, with fans of the undead game mode being familiar with the fire-breathing dog who shares the name.

Why A Last-Gen Call of Duty Port Isn't All Doom And Gloom

For most game studios, last-gen ports for their games mean that there is much more time spent on making sure both versions of the title can function, rather than maximising the details put into the new-gen optimisation.

However, in Call of Duty's case, this isn't the end of the world. With the entire franchise set to all work off the Infinity Ward engine - including potential ports for Nintendo Switch and NVIDIA - a last-gen version of the game could actually be a necessity for expansion.

Of course, those with new-gen consoles will reap the benefits of Call of Duty 2024, given the snappier reaction times in multiplayer and sharper render rates for the battle royale. Treyarch has plenty of time to mull over its decision and hopes to release the most-ready Call of Duty in the modern era.
