Call of Duty has entered a strange state since the purchase of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. The sale was historical and marked what could end up being an entirely new era for the gaming industry, but in turn, it threw a lot of massive IPs into a world of uncertainty. What is the future of Overwatch, of Starcraft, of Diablo? We still don't actually know - but the franchise at the eye of the storm is Call of Duty, the company's most lucrative name.

Rumours that the games would become exclusive to Xbox were raised and quelled, and in its place, fans are now wondering if the franchise will be a day one Game Pass release - and now, reports have indicated that the games would be taking a year break in order to readjust and make Call of Duty better than ever.

But Activision has a different view on the matter.

A recent report by Bloomberg suggested that Call of Duty, for the first time since the mid-2000s, would be taking a year out to readjust and make sure the next title was as good as it could be. It was taken as bond, but Activision has since come forward to state that this wasn't going to be the case.

Activision has issued an official statement (via GamesRadar) to assure fans and shareholders that, in fact, Call of Duty 2023 will be going ahead.

"We have an exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year, and beyond. Reports of anything otherwise are incorrect. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right," reads the statement.

So, it looks like we're getting more Call of Duty in 2023, but the question still begs to be asked - what will it actually be?

What Will Call Of Duty 2023 Be?

With zero specifics being offered in the statement, it's fair to speculate as to what kind of Call of Duty is coming up - especially as it could end up being the separate free-to-play title that will come alongside Warzone 2, rumoured to be a new mobile experience. There's still every chance that the yearly mainline title could be done away with, as the statement didn't specify the grandeur of the titles on the way - but we're just going to have to wait to see exactly what's coming.

Now that the conversation has turned to what could come of Call of Duty if it missed a year of mainline titles, this announcement will come as a relief to some, and a disappointment to others. Either way, Call of Duty isn't slowing down, and it'll be just as present in gaming as it has been for the last decade - for better or worse.
