There are many reasons you'll want to learn how to drop Samples in Helldivers 2, as it can give you a chance to bank them at the extraction site or give them to another player.

The game features a lot of strategy, even outside of the combat encounters and your decisions on what Stratagems and weapons to bring into missions, as there are many progressions features related to collecting items during missions. This means it's a good idea to collect Samples and learn the features related to them.

How to drop Samples

Dropping Samples is dependent on your input method of choice:

  • Mouse & Keyboard: Hold the X key to bring up the radial menu, then select the 'Drop Samples' option in the lower right of the menu
  • Controller: Hold down on the D-Pad to bring up the radial menu, then select the 'Drop Samples' option in the lower right of the menu

Doing this will drop all your currently held Samples at your feet in one container with blinking lights so it's easy to spot, much like when a Helldiver dies with Samples on their person.

I find the best reason to drop Samples is to leave them at the extraction point whenever you pass by it during a mission. This allows you to essentially bank them for when you actually extract later.

You also don't have to worry about dying somewhere else on the map and potentially losing them. Alternatively, you can designate one person as the Sample carrier for whatever reason, and hand them all over for safekeeping.
