Modern Warfare is an absolute classic franchise at this point, let alone the cultural highlight for Call of Duty, but it's had a strange life cycle.
The first game revolutionised first-person shooters. The second game expanded with an iconic narrative that stunned fans everywhere. The third… was more Modern Warfare, but still universally beloved - and then it got rebooted.
2019's Modern Warfare was a surprise, but a welcome one - featuring a brand new engine, that ultimately lay the framework for the success of Warzone, and arguably saved the franchise in the process. And now, with a sequel coming this year, it's clear that Modern Warfare isn't done with us yet, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
But, surprisingly, it looks like fans are looking backwards rather than forwards.
Modern Warfare 3 Becomes Most-Watched Game On Twitch
In a massive shock to fans, Twitch has been overtaken by Modern Warfare 3, clocking in at over 350,000 concurrent viewers on March 13. It was only beaten out on the homepage by the Just Chatting category, besting Call of Duty counterparts, Vanguard and Warzone, by an incredibly wide margin.
Fans have been incredibly surprised to see the game make a big comeback like this, especially as it came out over ten years ago now, all the way back in November 2011.
But, there's a perfectly good explanation for the resurgence of love for the classic title.
Twitch Streamer Hosts Massive MW3 Tournament
The return in love for Modern Warfare was actually the result of a huge throwback tournament, courtesy of Spanish streamer IlloJuan.
The tournament enlisted Twitch giants like TheGrefg and Ibai, who roped in huge amounts of viewers with the host himself boasting over 100,000 alone. It's nice to see classic games like this get some love online, and it's fun to see an unexpected return from a game like this on the Twitch homepage.
The tournament was clearly a huge deal if it was able to take over Twitch so effortlessly. IlloJuan, if you're reading, could you do Black Ops next? Cheers.
