While DC often gets called out for its darker tones (thanks mainly to the brooding Batman), let's remember Marvel Comics are no walk in the park either. The same can be said for the movies, with the various live-action Spider-Man outings being as dark as Matt Reeves' The Batman in some places. Video games are no different, and you'll know Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy is pretty grim.

The general rule in comics is that no one is ever really dead apart from Bruce Wayne's parents and Uncle Ben. Now, modders have taken this one step further by modding the darkest part of Peter Parker's life into Insomniac Games' Spider-Man. With the title losing its PlayStation exclusivity for its PC port, the modding community is running wild.

What Is The Uncle Ben Spider-Man Mod?

Since its release in 2018, Spider-Man has evolved with the PS5 Remastered release in 2020, and now, the long-awaited PC port. Spider-Man swung onto PC on August 12, and as PlayStation never released a modding tool for the OG, it was pretty impossible to have much fun with it outside what Insomniac delivered. In the week since Spider-Man Remastered has released on PC, Nexus Mods has become a fun factory of mods.

Easily the weirdest mod out there is Become Uncle Ben that is the brainchild of Nexus Mods user Saphire. In the game, Uncle Ben's gravestone is an Easter egg you can actually visit, and taking these textures, the Become Uncle Ben mod literally swaps Peter Parker out with the inanimate slab that reads: "Beloved Husband and Uncle 1952-2010."

The mod goes over the classic Spider-Man suit, although we're not sure why you'd want to zip across the New York City skyline in such a morbid way. Even though there have only been 132 downloads (we wonder why), footage from @GameGriffin on Twitter means Become Uncle Ben has gone viral. We'll admit that pummelling Kingping's goons as Uncle Ben's grave does look like more fun than we expected.

What Other Spider-Man Mods Are There?

If you head to Nexus Mods, the most popular Spider-Man mods give us the iconic Symbiote Suit from the comics, a photorealistic mode to capture the feel of Sam Raimi's movies, and a 100% file. More ridiculous ones let you play as Stan Lee or Kingpin, but we've also covered the darker side of a homophobic mod that removed all pride flags from the game. It's sparked a debate on Nexus Mods, with the site saying that anyone who tries to create mods like this in any game will have their accounts permanently deleted.

We're big fans of mods over here, and you might remember when someone "ruined" the Lands Between with a smorgasbord of Elden Ring mods. There was the same with the Resident Evil demo where someone swapped Lady Dimitrescu with Thomas the Tank Engine. We've still not found that loved locomotive in Spider-Man, but it's just a matter of time. In the meantime, save the city that never sleeps as Uncle Ben's gravestone... if you really want to.
