Modern Warfare 3's Zombies mode has been met with a mixed reception ever since its release, with some players loving the open-world spin on the undead formula, and others missing the round-based format that's typically associated with OG games.
While arriving with a hefty amount of content, Operation Deadbolt's updates have been pretty lacklustre. Season 2 offered almost nothing and while Season 3 has delivered some features, it's not been enough to turn any heads.
Now, Zombies fans have been hit with another major blow, as developers Treyarch will no longer be working on the mode.
Treyarch is no longer working on MW3 Zombies
As reported by the popular Call of Duty account CharlieINTEL, Treyarch is stepping away from MW3 Zombies completely.
In a recent creator call this week, the devs revealed that they are shifting their "focus to something exciting on the horizon" and as a result, they no longer have time to work on Zombies.
While Activision has made it clear Sledgehammer Games will finish development on the remaining MWZ story, it's hard to imagine it has many resources to put towards Zombies with multiplayer being so popular.
For a lot of fans, this is a clear indication that MWZ is finished, and Treyarch is effectively putting a bullet in the mode before moving into its next project.
MW3 fans can't believe "superior" DMZ was scrapped for Zombies
This news has infuriated some members of the community, particularly those who feel like DMZ was sacrificed in favour of MWZ.
In their eyes, Treyarch's departure and choice to "ditch" Zombies means DMZ's death was pointless, and development should have continued for that mode instead.
"Imagine killing DMZ, the free superior mode that allowed the paid MWZ to even exist, and then ditch that so you can go make the next paid version of Zombies," said one user, with another arguing "Activision is shooting themselves if they don't bring back DMZ."
We'll have to see what Sledgehammer brings to the table with MWZ, but it's clear the fanbase believes it's going to be barebones at best.
