As a narrative device, video games are packed with iconic characters. Whether they come initially from film, TV, comic books, or they're entirely fresh for the medium, it's often characters and their impact on a game's narrative that makes them compelling to play in the first place.

Also, it's usually villains that bring players around. Supervillains, capitalist bigwigs, or just complete lunatics - a good game is nothing without a reason for you to fight. Video games offer some of the very best baddies that storytelling has to offer. Naturally, it's led gamers to have a big argument over the internet. We should have seen it coming, really.

What Is The Video Game Villain Argument?

Fans are arguing online about who the very best video game villain is. It all took place on the argument capital of the world - Reddit. The post to kick off the conversation was started by user Outrageous-Arugula89, who shared the question with a screenshot of Metal Gear Rising's Senator Armstrong.

Wheatley and GLaDOS from the Portal franchise have come up in a few comments, citing their witty and smarmy writing. The brilliantly deranged Vaas from Far Cry 3 makes an appearance too.

One user makes a great case for Ratchet & Clank's Dr Nefarious, though - "His voice is absolute, unmatched perfection for his role", they say. "There is no contest".

Who Is The Best Video Game Villain?

The medium is full of brilliant baddies across genres - but among the best are Mark Hamill's Joker from the Batman Arkham games for his shrill cruelty or Portal's GLaDOS thanks to her brutal straightforwardness. Bioshock's Frank Fontaine offers a masterclass in villain writing, making him a twisty and maddeningly frustrating baddie to take down, that makes you feel incredibly satisfied when you've finally finished him off.

The topic is obviously subjective, and everyone will have Sephiroths and Bowsers that they hold dear to their heart - so we're more than happy to let players continue to argue online. After all, what's the internet for if not bickering about video games?
