The Mushroom Kingdom needs saving again, but this time, you've got some help. That's right, Super Mario Odyssey just got co-op multiplayer - a mere five years after the colourful platformer came to the Nintendo Switch.

Mario games have a long history of topping the charts. Much like Super Mario 64 on the N64 or Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii, Super Mario Odyssey reinvented the long-running franchise. Thanks to the new addition of Cappy, Mario could possess a whole host of creatures and enemies, with even Bower becoming a playable character.

Does Super Mario Odyssey Have Co-Op?

CraftyBoss has created the Mario Odyssey co-op mod, which works on every level and even syncs progress when collecting moons. This unofficial mod can only be played using a modded Switch and also required a Super Mario Odyssey ROM.

"Have fun exploring kingdoms with friends, playing game modes, or beating the game as fast as possible!" says the description. "This mod is still early in development, so expect bugs and un-refined aspects as we work hard to improve it and make the mod as polished as possible."

If you weren't already sold, the mod supports all of Mario's snazzy wardrobe choices, which even includes the ones that were only available in the game's 2D sections. This is very much a work-in-progress mod that will support custom game modes in the future. A prop hunt mode could be in the works but isn't concrete yet, while a hide and seek mode is already playable.

What's Next For Mario?

It's been five years since Odyssey came out, which is usually more than enough time for Nintendo to announce a sequel. Although we've had Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury in that time, there's been no official word on where the mainline Mario games go next. Previously, we heard a lot about Mario Odyssey 2

Although the leaks were unsubstantiated, they were previously doing the rounds years ago in an info dump that included the now-confirmed Sonic Frontiers. If Super Mario Odyssey 2 is a thing, rumours claim it could make Luigi into a playable character and introduce a new version of Cappy in the form of "Bowler". Now that Super Mario Odyssey co-op is (sort of) a thing, gather your own squad to rescue Peach from her impending marriage to Bowser.
