Steven Spielberg ignites our hopes of a Call of Duty movie

Saving Captain Price would be the sequel of the century with this Call of Duty demon behind the camera.

Call Of Duty Spielberg

The gaming world is fevering into Hollywood with every vine of The Last of Us' fungus, with an abundance of series and films lined up to bring the games we love to the box office.

There's even an entire series launching on Amazon that will see twenty titles brought to life through live adaptations. For shooters, though, there's been little love following the live-action Halo series, which didn't quite live up to the hype over on Paramount Plus.

After working as an Executive Producer on Halo, Spielberg's ties to the gaming community might not be coming to a close, as his son has sparked life into a Call of Duty adaptation after revealing the director is quite the CoD fan.

It could be argued that Spielberg's butterfly effect directly led to the Call of Duty series being made; after finishing Saving Private Ryan and seeing its worldwide critical acclaim, he wrote the first Medal of Honor title, which proved to be one of the leading inspirations for CoD's early life.

Nowadays, Spielberg apparently spends some time playing Call of Duty. In an interview with PC Gamer, Steven Spielberg's son Max claimed that the esteemed director loves the series.

"He loves gaming," Max Spielberg said. “He plays games, and he’s a big PC gamer, so that’s kind of our bonding point as well. He’s like, ‘Hey, what’s good? What new Call of Duty should I be playing? Send me a list of the top five shooters, and I’ll get them downloaded, and we can play them together when you come over to the house."

As you might expect, Steven Spielberg is hardly that demon on Shipment that dropped 150 kills on you, slide-cancelling around the map. But he does appreciate the stories (let's hope he didn't spend much time on Modern Warfare 3...).

"He enjoys the campaign," said Max, "He’s big into story games, and I’m always trying to get him to play Uncharted. Y’know ‘it’s Indiana Jones, you’d appreciate this,’ and he’s always ‘I can’t do controllers, I only do keyboard and mouse.'”

The director has a handful of other video games to his portfolio, pairing with EA to make Boom Blox and the unseen LMNO, which reportedly had a real tear-jerking story before the development of the game ceased.

But as gaming seeps into Hollywood, and with Player Ready One already under his belt alongside Halo, maybe there is life to a possible Call of Duty movie after all.

Previous 'rumours' pinned a Call of Duty movie to Henry Cavill, although Captain Price himself (Barry Sloane) has been building up quite a portfolio of series in recent years (The Bay, Litvinenko, and The Company You Keep) and fans have called for him to star in any potential adaptations.

We might all have Spielberg to thank for the Call of Duty series, and it would be a just fit if he was the man behind the camera for any adaptation to Hollywood's walk of fame.
