SpongeBob SquarePants games will always have a special place in our hearts. It's entirely nostalgia-based, but whether it's Lights, Camera, Pants, Revenge of the Flying Dutchman or even the game based on the first movie (which is a sorely underrated banger), it's hard to disconnect from our love for the games.

With this in mind, the release of Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated was such a treat. Although it reminded us of the mechanical issues with the game, it was certainly a nice trip through time. And now, a spiritual successor is on the way, which looks to be a creative romp across Bikini Bottom.

What Is SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake?

A new gameplay trailer for the upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants game - fittingly titled The Cosmic Shake - has been revealed, and it teases a dream-like game that explores a bizarre multiverse of Bikini Bottoms. The game is a 3D platformer that serves as a spiritual successor to Battle for Bikini Bottom.

Even though there are beats of 2003's Battle for Bikini Bottom and the 2020 Rehydrated, there's a sweet new art style that makes everything feel a little softer. The trailer doesn't go easy, revealing a giant Gary boss and an exploration of the world from the episode that sees our favourite characters reimagined as cavemen - it's Season 3's "Ugh" by the way.

SpongeBob seems to have a whole new host of abilities, so at least Purple Lamp Studios' game looks like a fun platformer made for the most dedicated of fans. "This looks like a true sequel to Battle For Bikini Bottom I can't wait to play this game," cheered one. Another added, "I can tell instantly this is gonna be a freaking blast!!! Spongebob has Patrick's cartwheel from the movie game, Sandy's glide from BFBB, and even more moves!! I heard a jellyfish fields remix in there too! Can’t WAIT!!!"

When Is The Cosmic Shake Coming Out?

We don't have a concrete release date for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake just yet, but at least we know the consoles it's coming to. The underwater is launching on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. So basically, everything short of the Stadia.

Expect your return to that pineapple under the sea to release in 2023 at this stage, but to be fair, it could yet launch sooner. We'll just have to wait and see, but in the meantime, we'll be rinsing Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated in anticipation.
