Discord is perhaps one of the most useful ways that video games can maintain any sense of community. From groups of players squadding up in Call of Duty to accounts that keep fans updated on the progress of indie games in development, the service has been indispensable.

These days, Discord has got even better because it now has total integration with PlayStation. But, there's trouble a-brewing, as a new change is on the way that has frustrated a lot of fans.

Usernames are changing in Discord

It looks like one of the key differences that sets Discord apart from its competitors is about to be overhauled, as the creators of the channel-based communication app have revealed.

A new blog post has gone deep on why the username system exists in the form it does, and has explained exactly why the change is taking place. They've said in the post that users have run into numerous problems when trying to find new connections in the databases of the app.

As a fix, the Discord overlords are opting for a much simpler system that doesn't require four numbers following a user's display name. The changes will begin rolling out in the next few weeks, as invitations are extended to users to change their usernames.

It makes sense - but users aren't convinced it's a good idea. Those little numbers after your name might seem minor, but they've become a major part of Discord for fans.

Users react to Discord's changing usernames

In response to a tweet reporting the news, fans have expressed their frustrations with the new changes. One lamented, "Noooo What about my super funny #6969 tag Nooooo."

Another added, "I'm curious why they just don't drop the numbers and make everyone @ their current name? And then if there is a conflict of more than one with the name, they start with seniority? why make everyone go thru this?"

The change is minor from the outside, but to those it matters most to, it's a big and dramatic shift from the norm. Sorry to all you #0001 owners - your years of pride are worth nothing now.
