They say it's a case of the more the merrier, but when it comes to computing, is this always the case? In the mid-noughties, we went through that stage where mobile phones got smaller and smaller until they nearly disappeared. These days, we want bigger screens to get the most of our mobiles, and it's a trend that's been echoed in laptops. There's the importance of striking the right balance between portability and practicality, but that's gone out the window with this massive seven-screen laptop.

Looking more like something the army would use during tactical maneuvers, or Nasa would use on Mars, this chonky laptop has seven screens that fold out from the central console. The Aurora 7 laptop is definitely a futuristic bit of tech you can imagine sitting comfortably in Cyberpunk 2077, as it can turn any surface into a remote workstation.

What is the seven-screen laptop?

Shown off by Gizmodo, the laptop with seven screens is the work of the British computer company, Expanscape. The Aurora 7 is designed for content creators, data scientists, and developers who need as many screens as possible - right in front of them. Although the laptop is in its prototype stage - shown by the various 3D printed parts - the laptop boasts four 17.3-inch 4K UHD panels and three smaller displays that are seven inches with 1,920 x 1,200 resolution.

Elsewhere, there's an Intel i9 9900K 8-core processor, 64 GB of DDR4 RAM, Nvidia GTX 1060 series graphics, 2.5 terabytes of SSD storage, and 2 terabytes of HDD storage.  Expanscape wants the finished product to include 128 GB of RAM and over 16 terabytes of SSD storage. If that wasn't enough, there are wireless network adapters, Bluetooth, three USB ports, a Thunderbolt port, HDMI, stereo speakers, a webcam, a built-in subwoofer, and a backlit keyboard. Not too shabby!

Where can you buy the seven-screen laptop?

The A7 might seem like a novel idea, however, you'll need to have been lifting weights at the gym to carry it. The 4.3-inch-thick laptop clocks in at a weighty 26 pounds. The creators plan to trim that down to 22 lbs by the time it's finished, but still, that's not exactly as light as a MacBook Air. We imagine it's the kind of laptop you'd leave in one place, not take on your daily commute.

Be warned, the A7 isn't exactly packing a punch in the power department. Running all those screens will really drain the juice. The current configuration includes two internal batteries (82-Wh for the laptop itself and 148-Wh for the displays), which means the laptop and its seven screens only last an hour on a full charge. Despite only being in prototype form, Expanscape is still selling the Aurora 7. If you're already sold, the seven screens of the A7 will set you back a mystery price. Expanscape requires anyone interested to sign an NDA, but we're guessing it'll cost a pretty penny.

Those who are willing to hang around a bit longer can expect the A7 to drop in price if it hits mainstream production. While the idea might seem like an extravagance at its peak, the seven-screen Aurora 7 laptop is a novel one, to say the least. How much longer until someone tries to 1-up the A7 and create an eight-screen laptop?
