Horror games and horror game movie tie-ins might seem like they're everywhere these days. If it's not Gun Media's debacle with Friday the 13th: The Game, it's the upcoming adaptation of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All of these pale in comparison to the crossover chaos of Dead by Daylight, proving there are plenty more IPs that deserve their own outing.
Dead by Daylight has its own Saw crossover with Amanda Young as The Pig and Detective David Tapp as a Survivor, but apart from the 2018 DLC, we've been unable to put the pieces together of a proper Saw video game in over a decade. Much like the movies of the same name, there have been a couple of average Saw releases over the years, but what about the concept of Bloober Team delivering a Saw video game?
What Happened To The Saw Video Game?
If you haven't heard of Bloober, it's the acclaimed horror team that worked on the likes of A-Men and Basement Crawl before finding mainstream success with Layers of Fear. The 2016 horror followed an unhinged artist as he navigated the crumbling corridors of a Victorian mansion. This was the start of Bloober's horror fame, with the Polish developer later working on 2019's Blair Witch.
The idea of a Saw video game comes into play because it turns out Bloober passed on it in favour of Blair Witch. Speaking to IGN at Polish games conference Digital Dragons, Bloober CEO Piotr Babieno explained how multiple movie studios approached them and asked for a specific story to tie into an upcoming launch. He said that Lionsgate (the studio behind Saw) loved Layers of Fear and wanted to work with Bloober.
According to Babieno, Lionsgate gave Bloober a list of IPs ad gave it the choice. "We could [have chosen] Saw, which is more popular than Blair Witch," he continued, "But we decided to take Blair Witch because the universe has many opportunities to build something new. That was the reason why we chose this project."
Will We Get Another Saw Video Game?
Teasing what the future holds for Bloober, Banieno said he's frequently approached by horror IPs asking for tie-in video games. As for what's next, he concluded, "Unfortunately, for almost one year, we have [had to say] 'pass' to almost everything, because we don't have [the] capacity to do any more titles at one time." Well, that definitely sounds like those rumours of Bloober making a Silent Hill 2 remake could be on the money.
Interestingly, the Saw licence is still in the hands of Konami - which has held it since 2009. Konami worked on the disappointing Saw: The Video Game from 2009 and 2010's lacklustre Saw II: Flesh & Blood. With the Saw franchise having limped off the silver screen and Spiral: From the Book of Saw faring moderately as a reboot, the Saw name isn't exactly a hot property right now. Still, if Bloober gets the chance again, we'd love to see what it can do with Billy the Puppet on a tricycle.
