Popular horror franchise Resident Evil has gone through a lot of changes in recent years, to the point that more modern titles barely resemble the earlier games.

Over the years everything from camera angles to genre has shifted, and fans of the classic games have been looking for something to fill the void ever since.

An unofficial Resident Evil prequel is the game we've all been looking for

Resident Evil Containment was created by Aydan Watkins, a mod maker for the classic Resident Evil titles.

Containment operates as a kind-of prequel to the original 1996 Resident Evil, with the same fixed camera and janky graphics.

In Resident Evil Containment, you play as a member of the Umbrella Security Force, who has been sent to the Arklay Mountains after receiving a distress call. It is quickly clear that something is horribly wrong at the Spencer Estate.

The unofficial Resident Evil game is single-player and has its own unique story, cutscenes, characters, weapons, and puzzles. It features all of the classic Resident Evil mechanics and is clearly a love letter to the franchise.

Fans of Resident Evil are excited to jump into Containment

Resident Evil fans have reacted positively to the release of the unofficial prequel, praising the hard work and dedication that went into the project.

One YouTube comment read: "I think it's awesome that people like you Aydan, Is still working, bending this old game engine. To make new content for a very small group of individuals that still play and love the Originals. Thanks Aydan! For all the work you put into resident evil."

Another comment on Twitter said: "Amazing! Can't wait to play this, thank you for your work."

Resident Evil Containment is available to play now for free, and is a stand-alone mod, meaning you don't need to own the original game to play it.
