Portal and its sequel, Portal 2, are among the greatest puzzle games ever conceived. And they're not even controversial picks, either.

The world was won over by Valve's Aperture Labs, helmed by GLaDOS who has since become one of the greatest video game villains of all time, and all over again when Wheatley tried to take the labs for himself. The narrative of the games is the thing that binds the puzzling together and makes it all so impressive and fun - and has earned Portal 2 especially a spot in the video game hall of fame.

But, of course, fans have been clamouring for a sequel for years, and Valve's aversion to the number 3 certainly hasn't done fans any favours. But one of the writers of the games is on our team, and seems eager to head back to the franchise.

In a recent appearance on the Kiwi Talkz podcast, Portal writer Erik Wolpaw has suggested that he'd be keen to make a return to the series. He's since worked on the likes of Half-Life: Alyx and Aperture Desk Job, and now he's revealed that he'd like to tackle a third Portal game before he gets too old.

"We've gotta start Portal 3, that's my message to you," he said. "Anything you can do, let's do it, let's just make it happen. Because I am also not getting any younger, like we are reaching the point where it's crazy to think, literally gonna be too old to work on Portal 3 so we should just do it."

Will We Ever Get A Third Portal Game?

Typically in the gaming industry, seeing sequels to popular games is commonplace. But Valve has always been reluctant to engage with the idea unless there's a narrative or creative reason to do so.

The long-standing memes of a Half-Life 3 never materialising are a result of Valve having no intention to extend a game's life beyond what is necessary, seemingly in an act of cultural preservation - so a third Portal game could sadly never materialise.

We trust that Valve will bring the series back if they deem it important, but until then, we're left in the lurch. Here's hoping that Wolpaw's comments spur something in Gabe Newell - because any opportunity to return to Aperture Labs is one worth exploring.
