Xbox Game Pass has been absolutely soaring for some time now, and it's led a lot of fans to think - where are PlayStation in all of this?

It's a fair question to ask, to be fair - Sony's foray into video game streaming services haven't exactly stood up to the monster of Xbox Game Pass, offering fans games behind the PlayStation Now service, but failing to really stick the landing. There are some fantastic games hidden behind the paywall, but a sheer lack of anything to set it apart from anything but a service that tries desperately to keep up with its competition has made it seem immensely lacklustre. Fortunately, though, PlayStation is working on it.

Project Spartacus is set to totally revamp the service, seeking to give the consumer more bang for their buck - but the pricing structure will be entirely overhauled in the process. And it looks like that very structure has leaked.

PlayStation Now's New Pricing Structure Has Leaked

Industry insider Jeff Grubb has leaked the pricing structure of the new Sony gaming subscription service, and it seems pretty steep.

Speaking on Grubbsnax, the paywalled show on Giantbomb (thanks for the transcription, VGC) Grubb claims that he's got the scoop on how much the Game Pass competitor is likely to charge consumers, as well as revealing that a launch isn't that far off. "It's probably getting pretty close to this actually launching, something's probably going to happen by the end of this month and I don't think that necessarily means publicly, I think in terms of the internal milestone of where the service needs to be," revealed Grubb.

"Right now [the subscription tiers] are called 'essential', 'extra', and 'premium'. The pricing again, could be a placeholder, but the pricing is $10 a month for essential, $13 a month for extra and $16 a month for premium."

What Is Included In PlayStation's Game Pass?

Grubb has expanded on what is included in the Game Pass competitor, suggesting that game trials will take centre stage rather than full games, as well as some backwards compatibility with 'classic' games.

"I don't know what 'classic' games means, but I do know that it's a major part of this premium tier. So you have game trials, classic games and streaming on this premium tier," said Grubb. "For the extra tier, you get a 'downloadable game catalogue' - anything on PSNow that was downloadable, seems like it would be in there. 250, 300 games, something like that."

It's an interesting tactic for sure, and if this does end up being Sony's proposed model, it'll be interesting to see how the move pays off. Sony has been overdue an opportunity to take on Game Pass as it is, so we're looking forward to seeing what the future of Project Spartacus truly holds.
