It's been 16 years since Wii Sports revolutionised the sporting sim, and yet, it's left a trail of destruction in its wake. As we strapped on the Wii Remote and Nunchucks, it was akin to John McEnroe getting ready for the Grand Slam. Unfortunately, McEnroe's signature temper tended to come with it too.

Whether you were bowling, playing tennis, or boxing, there was no better thrill than knocking Grandma out in the first round and dancing atop the unconscious body of her grey-haired Mii. Wii Sports was a cultural phenomenon back in the day, and while the franchise has continued, it's come to the Switch for the first time with Nintendo Switch Sports. Unfortunately, some things never change.

Switch Sports Is Already Smashing TVs

Less than 24 hours after the 2022 reimagining of the classic Sports series landed on Switch, streamer 63man shared the moment he got a little too enthusiastic and managed to hurl his Joy-Con at the TV. Cue an epic "live stream fail", with his fancy setup becoming worthless in a matter of seconds.

Plenty of gaming sympathised with this facepalm moment, agreeing that it's sometimes easy to get caught up in the action of Switch Sports and forget you aren't actually competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics. One joked, "They may have removed Baseball but at least they kept this classic," while another added, "Can't have a nintendo sports game without it."

Not everyone was on their side though. Questioning why the OP hadn't used the Joy-Con straps, one person wrote: "Right? It feels like I've been transported back to 2006 when the Wii first came out and there were all those memes about people breaking their sh*t with wiimotes. You'd think we would have learned by now!"

Straps Save Screens

Don't say we didn't warn you - it's not like you've had 16 years to figure this stuff out. Nintendo itself has tried to cover its back, with an official warning reading: "[For parents] For your safety, please accompany your child when playing Nintendo Switch Sports. Please be careful not to hit the children playing with each other or hit the Joy-Con on the TV."

It's a tale as old as time, with the OG Wii Sports grabbing headlines for this exact reason. Things got so bad, Nintendo President Satoro Iwata started a campaign about playing safely, while the company even offered replacement wrist straps that were nearly twice as thick as the original ones. Still not enough, you might remember those rubberised controller jackets that were supposed to lessen a blow. In 2022, we can't wait for the wave of stories about streamers giving themselves black eyes by accidentally hurling a Joy-Con around the living room.
