Okay, let's be honest, Kirby isn't many people's favourite Nintendo character. Although this adorable pillow of fluff has been a mainstay of the gaming scene since the release of Kirby's Dream Land in 1992, he's often fallen into the shadow of Mario, Link, and Donkey Kong.

As the Nintendo Switch still continues to sell great guns, Kirby is once again destined to hit the mainstream thanks to the release of Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The first true 3D adventure in the mainline Kirby series has a lot of us talking, and now, he's just cemented his title as one of 2022's biggest games... all because of fishing.

Why Are Fans Obsessed With Fishing Kirby?

The latest trailer for Forgotten Land delved deep into the mechanics of this candy-coated dystopian nightmare and what pulls Kirby from his happy days swallowing his favourite foods.

The trailer was mainly there to show off the story of how Kirby washed up on this foreign land - while also promoting co-op play - but instead, fishing was the main takeaway.

In a brief snippet, we saw Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee enjoying a spot of fishing in what looks like a fun minigame. Despite its fleeting appearance, it soon took over the internet. Who knew all Kirby needed was fishing to help him trend?

In response to Kirby fishing, one fan even joked "Game of the Year". Ironically, the idea of Kirby fishing is a deep cut at the very start of the franchise where he was able to fish in a cutscene. However, things have come a long way in the past 30 years - meaning Kirby can now fish in-game. What a world we live in!

What Else Do We Know About Kirby And The Forgotten Land?

As for Kirby and the Forgotten Land, developer HAL is on the marketing assault ahead of the title's March 24 release. The trailer showcased a co-op mode that reminds us of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, while we also get to see an array of new hats that let Kirby do everything from shoot guns to burrow into the ground.

If this wasn't enough, there are gacha games, and you can even take up a job at the Waddle Dee Café (if you're bored). Still, that's nothing compared to fishing. It's definitely a more adult adventure, that some think has been inspired by The Last of Us

This is the second time in recent times that a game has gone viral because of fishing. You might remember when Bethesda revealed the Skyrim Anniversary Edition, which added fishing and blew fans old and new away. So, go fetch your rods and make the most of Kirby and the Forgotten Land
