After almost eight years, it's almost time for the Nintendo Switch to fly off to the Rainbow Road in the sky. The hybrid console, which has been a huge success for the manufacturer since its debut in March 2017, has been a great servant - but it's time to look beyond.
It seems like there's a new Nintendo Switch 2 rumour every week, with Nintendo itself acknowledging a new console is coming but being hesitant to offer any further details. Now, though, it sounds like the Switch 2 will have one of the biggest requests fans have asked for—backward compatibility.
Switch 2 will reportedly be backward compatible
Over on Reddit, a post claims that the Switch 2 has entered production, but it's not that rumour we're interested in.
Commenting on the post is user NatetheHate2, who has a track record of Nintendo leaks. The account notes "It has backwards compatibility support", but stopped short of confirming how far that'll go.
Previous reports have suggested the Switch 2 will play digital and physical Switch games, but it took Nintendo years to build in backwards compatibility for earlier consoles via the Nintendo Switch Online service - will that extend to the new console?
Still, if you've got a hefty library of Switch titles, this will be good news - from Super Mario Odyssey, to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom and a bevy of Pokemon titles, it's been an incredible generation for Nintendo this time around.
