Having toppled Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2, Sledgehammer Games' Modern Warfare 3 is finally the currently standing Call of Duty title, and fans are… unsure.
On one hand, MW3 continues the standard of gameplay from its immediate predecessor, and that game certainly wasn't bad. However, some had been hoping for something with a little more flair. To stack on top of that, the MW3 campaign immediately became the worst-rated in the series' acclaimed history.
Given that we've had a few campaign stinkers over the years, that's a pretty impressive feat for Sledgehammer. Still, many of you come for the multiplayer. Now, fans have frustrations with the way that the supposedly new-gen Modern Warfare 3 looks on certain consoles.
MW3's Xbox Series S visuals are brought into question
There might be a multitude of problems with Modern Warfare III, but it was only a matter of time before players started to rag on its visuals. Fans are to Reddit, claiming that the visuals in the Xbox Series S version of the game are poor.
User ServvDropEmOff has taken to the Call of Duty subreddit to share screenshots that show off some apparent dropoff between Xbox’s Series consoles, revealing just how grainy and blurry things can look on the Xbox Series X's little brother.
“My MW3 is very blurry and grainy on Xbox Series S, the textures look very sharp and shiny as if I can see the pixels from them, signs and everything are blurry but when I put it in 60hz it’s perfectly normal,” they say. It looks like other fans agree, as they're calling the visuals of the game "Fortnite CoD."
Comparing the latest Call of Duty to the notoriously cartoonish graphics of Epic's battle royale favourite is a bit of a stinger. Fortnite looks great in Unreal Engine 5, but it's not exactly known for going for realism like CoD does.
Fans slate MWIII on the Xbox Series S
The thread reveals this isn't an isolated incident, with many calling out the Xbox Series S' lack of grunt for the reason behind this "grainy" MW3. "The IW engine is notorious for grainy looks, especially lower resolutions,” says one user, reassuring players that this is pretty much what they bargained for when they bought the console.
"I have the Series S, and something that needs to be understood is that it's an entry-level console. It won't achieve 120hz, although it'll try, and it's gonna drop the resolution to a dynamic 1080p that very likely will not hit that target. You take that into account and place it with a terribly low effort game, and visuals are gonna take a major hit."
Others weren't as helpful, with another laughing. "Bros using a budget console Series S and expecting 120hz and good graphics." A third concluded, "'Xbox series S' Found your problem." Across the board, technical experts have said the Series S isn't the preferred way to play, but then again, not all of us can afford a Series X.
It's only natural that visuals for Modern Warfare 3 would tank on what is ultimately the lowest-powered console of the generation, but it looks like fans still aren't happy. Will they ever be? The jury's still out.
