The round-based formula has been the typical format for Call of Duty's Zombies over the years, beginning in World at War and slowly evolving through the Black Ops series.

There was nothing quite like getting together with a group of friends, seeing how long you could survive the undead, and keep your fingers crossed whenever you opened the mystery box.

Instead of going for the classic experience with Modern Warfare 3, Sledgehammer opted to try something new and combine the open-world elements of DMZ with Zombies.

While immensely fun, it hasn't satisfied the OG Zombie fans, and according to leaks, Treyarch is working on a round-based mode for MW3.

MW3 leak suggests Treyarch is making round-based Zombies

As showcased by CoD: Zombies News, MW3 leaks courtesy of the Codwarfareforum and MWIIINTEL indicate a round-based mode may be on its way. These reports suggest that, in response to the backlash about Operation Deadbolt, Treyarch is now "working on something that will satisfy round-based players."

This is incredibly exciting news for those who prefer the classic experience, as it was expected that round-based wouldn't return until the next full CoD instalment in 2024.

If the leaks are true, it's difficult to know how fleshed out this mode will be, given it'll likely be added in a seasonal update during MW3's life cycle. However, with MW3 looking to host throwback seasons, it would be incredible to revisit some old-school Zombie maps as well as the planned multiplayer locations.

Why did MW3's Operation Deadbolt get so much backlash?

Now Operation Deadbolt is here, Zombies fans appear to have given it a chance and are now enjoying the mix of undead and DMZ elements.

However, at first, the news that round-based was not coming with MW3 was a massive disappointment. With multiplayer providing so much nostalgia, there were expectations that Zombies would follow suit with an OG experience.

Treyarch may have noticed this backlash and got started on a fresh round-based mode if the leaks are correct. This would be a major boost for MW3 and generate an unbelievable amount of hype, but we'll have to wait and see whether there's any truth in the rumour.
