While Modern Warfare 2's BlackCell offering has received overwhelming praise from the community as an "instant buy," there's one part of it that's leading to some frustration.

Before Season 6 BlackCell was even released, players noticed that it included the first-ever Smoke Grenade skin. This raised alarm bells from some fans, who are convinced Activision is trying to monetise every aspect of Call of Duty.

Well, now the Smoke Grenade is out and available, the community realised that the throwable actually has exclusive animations in-game.

Unfortunately, this hasn't been enough to restore the reputation of the Smoke Grenade skin, with players slamming the special effects as "trash" and "lame."

MW2 players aren't impressed with BlackCell Smoke Grenade

Taking to Twitter on September 27, popular Call of Duty account CharlieINTEL decided to show off the BlackCell Smoke Grenade's special animations.

When thrown, the smoke covers an area in a typical manner but also reflects the orange face of a cobra. While a few CoD fans were impressed with the spectacle, most are just extremely disappointed.

"No chance they slapped a glowing snake PNG on the front of the smoke," joked one user, with another claiming "Pretty lame tbh, glad I didn't buy BlackCell."

There are even a few competitors arguing that this could be considered "pay-to-win" as it's incredibly distracting to have to run through the mouth of a snake.

MW2 fans argue BlackCell smoke effects don't match the theme

When it comes to BlackCell, Activision has been consistent with the black and gold theme, which is something fans are starting to get bored of, encouraging the designers to be more creative.

However, when it comes to the Smoke Grenade, some players think the devs have missed an opportunity to create some amazing black and gold special effects.

One user made it clear that it "would've been better if it made the smoke darker and then sparkled gold," matching the BlackCell theme.

Either way, this is just the first Smoke Grenade skin to enter the CoD franchise and based on the past trajectory of cosmetics, there's going to be a lot more as we head into Modern Warfare 3.
