Cheaters have been a huge problem in the Call of Duty franchise for years now, and Modern Warfare 2 is certainly no different. While the devs have created an extra line of defence with the RICOCHET anti-cheat, many players are still using third-party software to gain an unfair advantage over their foes.

Recently, a set of improvements were announced for RICOCHET, supposedly helping detect more hackers and remove them from matches. Unfortunately, MW2 players are reporting an 'increase' in cheaters who are ruining their gameplay experience.

MW2 players have noticed 'increase' of hackers in multiplayer

Anybody else noticed an increase of low levels & hackers recently? Kinda annoying (reported him, idk if it does something tho)

Taking to the ModernWarfareII subreddit, one user decided to argue that there's been an uptick of hackers despite improvements to the anti-cheat.

This started a discussion in the thread, with one player agreeing that they've "noticed an increase lately, I used to barely run into any now it's once every like 5 games you'll see a guy with obvious walls."

For some players, the hackers they're running into don't even attempt to hide it from the lobby, with one user running into a competitor who got "132 kills with 3+ chopper gunners, VTOLs, mortar strikes and a nuke to end the game on Shipment."

According to the comments, hackers appear to pop up more often on Shipment and Shoot House, so it may be worth avoiding these maps for the time being if you're tired of running into cheaters.

How has the RICOCHET anti-cheat been improved in MW2?

In a recent Call of Duty blog, the RICOCHET team revealed that hallucinations had been added to the anti-cheat to help trick, detect, and ban more hackers.

Described as "decoy characters within the game that can only be detected by cheaters... These false characters are undetectable by legitimate players, and they cannot impact a legitimate player’s aim, progression, end of match stats."

While this was exciting news for the community, and a lot of players praised the devs for the improvements, the thread above shows there's still a lot of work to do when it comes to MW2's cheaters.

We'll just have to see if any more RICOCHET changes are coming and if the imminent release of MW3 comes with an upgrade for the entire overall system.
