Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's Ranked play is being hailed as the best competitive game mode the franchise has ever made, with lucrative rewards being complimented by a top 250 leaderboard, a grindable path through the divisions, and a system which has allowed players to find their accurate ranking.
However, some players have found that their Skill Rating - the ELO feature which determines your division and rank - has begun to plateau, with the points being earned dropping in stature at certain levels.
Now, the developers have answered the fans' questions and revealed the secrets to finding success in Modern Warfare 2 Ranked.
Treyarch explains how SR works in MW2 ranked
Treyarch's Lead Game Designer Lawrence Metten took to social media to clear up a few qualms with the Ranked mode after players became vocal at their SR Rating's fluctuation.
"You gain SR when you win, and lose SR when you lose - with the amount of SR determined by a combo of personal and team performance," he said. But the Skill Rating doesn't always go up and down by the same amount in each win.
Instead, it will fluctuate depending on the level of the team you're with, the skill rating of opponents, and in-game performance. All of which create your "Hidden Performance Range," a.k.a. the secret to your success...
'Hidden performance range' is the key to success in MW2 ranked
Metten continued to explain that your Hidden Performance Range (HPR) is a system that allows the game to identify where your rank should be, given you have the time to get there, by comparing your performances to those in similar ranks and your results against people in ranks above you.
"Beat players with a higher HPR than you and your HPR goes up, fall short of expectations and it goes down. Perform consistently and your HPR narrows in."
"HPR and SR are directly linked. You may start at 0 SR in MWII Ranked, but with each win the SR system is trying to climb you closer towards your underlying HPR. The further your SR is below your HPR target, the more SR you gain after each win," he added.
The system explains why you were once gaining 90 points per win in Bronze but are only being awarded 25 in Platinum, as you'll need to perform consistently at a higher level for your SR benefits to increase again.
This might be your answer to why it's hard to break through your current rank and get into the next division, but it's also quite telling of where you should fit into the competitive Call of Duty universe and what you need to do to advance.
