Metroid Prime 4 has been in the works for some time now, and it feels like players have had all the time in the world to feel a little deflated about it.

The FPS set in the sprawling, eerie, world of Metroid has been a long time coming. Just when players started to expect some gameplay footage or a release date, it was announced that the game would be entirely restarting its production.

That was right at the start of 2019, and since, we've heard nothing. We now have something of an update, but it's not a particularly good one for those of us who were hoping for a truly new-gen Metroid outing.

Metroid Prime 4 won't be open-world

Bummer. XboxEra co-founder Nick Baker has recently spoken of his understanding of Metroid Prime 4, knowing someone who has "gotten eyes" on it.

The game isn't set to be open-world, which will come as a disappointment to most fans. Many players have hoped that the game would open up a little, especially as it has been so long in development - but others are pretty staunch in the idea that the game should maintain its current structure.

The Metroid series has never been entirely open-world, and there are plenty who are afraid that the step up to a whole new way to experience the title could dampen the overall experience or potentially tank the entire thing.

Even if Metroid 4 won't be giving God of War Ragnarok or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom a run for their money in terms of a sprawling backdrop, there's supposedly still plenty to enjoy.

Metroid Prime 4 is 'visually unbelievable'

In a pretty pleasant addition to the conversation around the game, Baker adds that the game is "visually unbelievable", and that the Metroid 4 itself is "surprisingly big, open".

Baker's suggestions about Metroid Prime 4 paint a picture of a truly incredible title, but only time will tell if it's truly worth the wait. It's going to have to be a banger, because to make up for a wait this long, the team is going to have to turn out a masterpiece. To be fair Nintendo's pretty good at that.
