Sony will be integrating the Discord voice and messaging service onto PlayStation soon, according to a notable industry leaker.

Discord has become the premium application for voice chat and messaging for gamers over the past few years. It allows people to create their own servers to communicate with each other and form communities, and many companies have followed suit with their own servers based around different gaming franchises. Microsoft added Discord functionality earlier in the year for Xbox, and now Sony are set to do the same, with the feature reported to be added next year.

Discord Voice Chat Coming To PlayStation

Notable industry leaker Tom Henderson has reported that Sony will be integrating Discord voice chat onto PlayStation 5 consoles soon. Writing for Exputer, he claimed that "several sources… have said that the full integration of Discord is coming to PlayStation consoles in the coming months."

He reported that Discord implementation on PlayStation has been in the "quality assurance phase for the past couple months," with the feature set to be fully added "during version 7.00." He later Tweeted on August 29 that the release date for version 7.00 is internally confirmed to be March 8, meaning this is when we can expect Discord to be added to PlayStation if development and testing stays on track.

Will Xbox And PlayStation Users Be Able To Communicate Directly?

In July earlier this year, Microsoft announced that Discord would be coming to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles for Xbox Insiders, allowing them to test the service before its wider release. With the service now likely coming to PlayStation, it seems like Xbox and PlayStation users will be able to directly communicate on consoles for the first time.

Many companies have made steps to add crossplay over recent years, allowing players on different platforms to connect over multiplayer, and a shared way of communicating over voice chat seems like the next logical step. Neither Microsoft nor Sony have directly confirmed that there will be cross-console communication, but it will likely work if players are connected to the same server on the Discord application. However, we'll only know for sure once both consoles fully implement the voice service.
