Somehow, Konami Just Had Its Best Year Ever

As a company, Konami might be legendary, but recent years have seen it fall off of the cultural wagon a bit. It's been a while since we've seen a Metal Gear Solid, Contra, or Silent Hill game come from the Konami offices, and as such, the company has been widely forgotten over the last few years.

Even if Konami has managed to lose the Silent Hill domain, that clearly hasn't stopped it from reeling in the cash. In fact, its just had its most lucrative year of its existence. Somehow.

Konami Just Had Its Best Year Ever

In a bizarre surprise, it turns out that Konami, despite not releasing any hugely lucrative games from its best franchises, has had its most financially successful year ever.

The last financial year's stats have been revealed, focussing on the money earned between April 2021 and March 2022. Konami has unveiled a huge ¥54.8 billion profit, which amounts to roughly $425 million. Blimey.

Believe it or not, Konami released 18 home console titles in this time, with many of them being from unestablished franchises over here in the west - so how exactly has Konami managed to have such a massive year?

How Did Konami Make So Much Money This Year?

The money that Konami has made over the past year can be divided into a few categories of the things that the company is actually creating - Digital Entertainment (or home console games), Entertainment (its pachinko machines and arcade games), Sports (because the company actually runs a series of leisure centres in Japan. Who knew?) and a category called Gaming & Systems (which is casino software).

After crunching numbers, though, it still looks like 72% of Konami's revenue comes from its Digital Entertainment, and it's probably got the surprise success of Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel to thank for a good chunk of this.

Though Konami's name might not be as bright in the west anymore, they're still a giant over in Japan, and that's likely where most of the money is coming from. Either way, the company has had a massive year. Just wait until the return of Silent Hill - then it will be looking at big bucks.
