Don't have robotic nightmares - a Five Nights at Freddy's movie is still on the way. While Scott Cawthon's survival horror is eight years old and going strong, the idea of a movie has been in the works for longer than we'd care to remember.

All too often, video game movies are given the boot, with The Sims, BioShock, and The Secret of Monkey Island all kicking the bucket. Although Cawthon has given his blessing, and a Five Nights movie nabbed the acclaimed Blumhouse, things have gone suspiciously quiet.

What's Going On With The Five Nights At Freddy's Movie?

When one fan tweeted Blum and asked for an update on Five Nights at Freddy's movie, the horror hound said, "It really is still coming. I promise, guys." Although it's not a massive update, at least it's confirmation the long-awaited outing is out there somewhere.

You might remember that a big-screen FNaF was first announced in 2015. After moving from Warner Bros. to Blumhouse, Home Alone and Harry Potter's Chris Columbus was attached to direct. With Columbus' usually family-friendly tone, he was a strange choice but one we could see paying off.

In 2018, the original script (that followed the events of the first game) was scrapped. Following two years of silence, it was only last year that Cawthon revealed Columbus had stepped away from the project. Even though this has left Five Nights in development hell, Blum's update should reassure us.

When Will We See Five Nights At Freddy's?

The problem is, Blum doesn't give fans anything to hold on to in terms of a release date. Five Nights at Freddy's was supposed to launch in 2020, and two years later, the fact we don't have an updated schedule is more than a little worrying.

Let's also remember that Blumhouse has its slate full right now. Alongside Halloween Ends releasing later this year, there's Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone, an untitled sequel to The Exorcist, and much more.

If all of this wasn't enough, the recent release of Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach went largely under the radar - which isn't a good sign for the movie. Then again, you only have to look at Sony's long-troubled Uncharted and its various departing directors/stars to see patience is a virtue.

With each passing year, the usually loyal FNaF fan base is losing patience. Having Blum at the helm is all well and good, but if Five Nights at Freddy's doesn't get a move on, those rotten robots are in danger of going rusty. Thankfully, video game movies are all the rage in 2022, so we'd better watch this space.
