Ever since Xbox announced its upcoming purchase of Activision Blizzard, there's been a certain nervousness among Call of Duty fans. Of course, players on the Xbox Series consoles are safe now - not only will Call of Duty be coming to these platforms thanks to their new-gen status, but the franchise will be sticking with Xbox from 2023 and beyond - regardless of whether or not Xbox continues to allow the series' appearance on other consoles.

Players on PlayStation are nervous - as there's every chance that the series could duck out from the platform at the end of its contractual obligations. If that wasn't enough to have you sweating, teasers from Infinity Ward certainly aren't helping.

Is Call Of Duty 2022 A New-Gen Exclusive?

As gamers get clammy about the ever-shrinking accessibility gap that Call of Duty occupies, the window seems to have shrunk further. A tweet from Infinity Ward has hinted ever so slightly that the next Call of Duty, rumoured to be a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare reboot, could be a new-gen exclusive.

"A new generation of Call of Duty is coming soon", it reads. "Stay frosty." Ominous. Though it may seem a stretch, there's plenty to address in this short tweet. For one, "Stay Frosty" has all but confirmed an official announcement of Modern Warfare II for fans.

Though on a technical level we already know that a new addition in the Modern Warfare series is coming, it's reassuring to see an official tease from Infinity Ward. But, the all-important question still lingers about whether PS4 and Xbox One players are about to be locked out.

What's Going On With Call Of Duty 2022?

The use of "a new generation" in this tweet certainly speaks for itself, though it's interestingly soon for Call of Duty to be remaining exclusive to high-end hardware. Though some games are skipping the Xbox One and PS4 entirely already, it's still very much the norm for games to straddle both last-gen and new-gen.

We'd already heard the mythical Modern Warfare 2 was struggling on last-gen, but if Infinity Ward really pushes the boundaries of console hardware, there's no stopping the franchise from shifting over. Call of Duty is in a transitional period in many ways right now, and we'll only really know about how it'll go when the features are officially revealed. One thing's for sure, though - we're not much less worried about it.
