Hyper Scape Update Adds Cross-Play For All Consoles

Even though Hyper Scape hasn't quite broken into the mainstream just yet, Ubisoft Montreal is trying to give the battle royale shooter a new lease of life by finally introducing cross-play to consoles. We're well into the swing of Season 2, and among the biggest updates, the pull of making Hyper Scape cross-play is a highlight of the already struggling battle royale game.

With criticisms still coming thick and fast, developers are addressing this with a December 10 update. As well as bringing new features to the base game and the newly added Team Deathmatch, cross-play is finally on the way.

When is Hyper Scape cross-play coming?

Senior Producer Graeme Jennings and Game Director Thomas Simon detailed what's on the way in the second Lab Update, promising that cross-play will allow you to play with other console owners without opening up your experience to the dangers of PC hackers. Cross-play will be automatically enabled for console and pair PlayStation players with Xbox during matchmaking. When it comes to PC, you'll need to invite friends to parties if you want to experience cross-play.

Although some may call out Ubisoft for not enabling full cross-play as a way to alleviate those achingly long queue times, Ubisoft is almost certainly trying to avoid problems the likes of Call of Duty: Warzone has faced. Despite Warzone being one of 2020's biggest success stories, fans are at their wits end with hackers going rogue in Verdansk and ruining matches for PlayStation and Xbox players. It's also important to remember PC players aren't completely left out in the cold - it's just a little harder to enjoy Hyper Scape cross-play.

Can Hyper Scape cross-play save the game?

Jennings explained how Team Deathmatch has been well received, however, it's not the end of the road in terms of overhauling Hyper Scape. He said, "We want to make sure we offer cross-play for all the possibilities to play with your friends". Elsewhere, Ubisoft has introduced an in-game feedback system so developers can communicate with players directly.

For those who've stuck with Hyper Scape, cross-play is a move in the right direction. The first-person shooter market has become increasingly saturated in recent times, making cross-play and cross-save an important feature to keep up with the competition. Importantly, cross-play could push Hyper Scape ahead of something like VALORANT - which is confined to PC for the foreseeable. Then again, VALORANT is a juggernaut compared to Hyper Scape slipping under the radar since its release.

It's wrong to say Hyper Scape needs "saving" (or that cross-play would be the answer), but thankfully, cross-play should help speed up matchmaking and make sure things keep ticking along at the high-octane level Ubisoft has tried to keep Hyper Scape ticking along at.
