The next-generations of consoles are nearly upon us, and as we embark into a new era of gaming technology, PlayStation has been hard at work revealing every fine detail on how they are manning the ship. With Sony on deck, the developers have dropped some insightful knowledge on how players can make the transition onboard without buying a one-way ticket.
Backwards compatibility support is one of the main components that PlayStation has had to nail before releasing the PS5, allowing users to continue playing their favourite PS4 games on the next-gen console. The developers have now released four ways that this can be achieved, Data transfer, disc tranf=sfer, by using external hard drives, and through the PlayStation store.
Data Transfer
By having your PS4 fully updated to the current software and by operating on the same account you aim to use on the PS5, you will be able to transfer over all of your data to your new PS5. You can then hook both consoles to the same network (WiFi) and transfer all the data through your router, or via an ethernet cable. Once connected, a step-by-step guide will be revealed which will take you through the transfer process.
Disk Transfer
This requires a game-by-game process. If you have games on disk rather than downloaded, you can insert the disk into the new console. This is not possible with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. This will then simply transfer over all of your progress too.
External Hard Drives.
The PlayStation 5 will be compatible with the same hard drives as the PS4, which will be connected via the USB ports. By simply taking your hard drive out of your PS4 and plugged into the PS5, all your games and progress will be intact.
PlayStation Store
If you have downloaded any games from the PlayStation Store you will be able to recover these on your new console. By accessing the Game Library or the Store itself on your PS5, when signed in to the same account as you purchased them on, you will be able to re-download them again without a fee.
It's best to use data transfer if possible, as you will be able to transfer your saved data too unless you use PlayStation Plus cloud storage. All methods are just as effective if you're looking to solely recover your game data.
