Hogwarts Legacy has jumped on its broomstick and is off to a "flying" start in 2023, as the long-awaited open-world Harry Potter game has finally taken flight... without the bespectacled hero.

With Avalanche Software's ambitious title taking place in the 1890s, we're far too early for the Boy Who Lived, James and Lily Potter, or even Tom Riddle. Still, that doesn't mean there aren't some familiar names treading these hallowed halls.

Disclaimer: While the creator of the Harry Potter franchise was not directly involved in the creation of Hogwarts Legacy, their comments on social media around transgender people are hurtful and dangerous given the size of their platform.

We’d implore you to read our explainer of the controversy so far, and consider supporting trans rights charities where possible.

How Many Weasleys Are There In Hogwarts Legacy?

Heading back to the Harry Potter books, the surname Black should mean a lot - being the lineage of Sirius Black. In Hogwarts Legacy, Simon Pegg stars as headmaster Phineas NigellusBlack, who rules with an iron fist.

Black might be a cruel headmaster who'll be infamous in Hogwarts history, but thankfully, he's got a cheerful deputy by his side. After studying at Hogwarts, Matilda Weasley went to work for the Ministry of Magic and then returned to the school.

Here, Matilda Weasley rose from the ranks of professor of Transfiguration to Deputy Headmistress. Think of her as something of a ginger-haired Professor McGonagall.

Professor Weasley isn't the only connection to Harry Potter's BFF, though. It turns out there's another Weasley hiding in plain sight. If you know where to look.

Who Is Garreth Weasley?

One side quest has players cross paths with a certain Garreth Weasley. The mischievous Garreth Weasley is a young wizard asking you to help him.

You'll meet Garreth Weasley at your first Potions class, with him being confirmed as the nephew of Professor Weasley.

Garreth is a bit of a rogue and wants you to steal a Fwooper feather from Professor Sharp's office. Sharp asks you to get a couple of ingredients as a trusted student, but Weasley puts you on the spot to steal the Fwooper feather.

We won't go into how things end, but safe to say, stealing a Fwooper feather won't massively affect the game or cast a dark mark over your playthrough.

Neither Matilda nor Garreth Weasley has appeared in the expanded Wizarding World outside of Hogwarts Legacy, but with them being colourful additions to the game, we say the more the merrier when it comes to the Weasley family tree.
