Despite having just penned a ten-year deal to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo consoles for the next decade, the servers for Wii and DS consoles have just been killed off.
Nintendo has always struggled to break into the Call of Duty universe, with their audience being much more party-based rather than sweaty shooters, but many modes like Zombies were popular with the interactive consoles back in the day.
However, these days are now finished indefinitely, as Call of Duty has announced the discontinuation of the Wii and DS ports for some of the franchise's most loved games.
Call of Duty shuts down Nintendo Wii and DS servers
Although Call of Duty hasn't landed on Nintendo consoles in a decade, with the last game being Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Wii U in 2013, the revival of the servers of the classic games on Xbox spurred some life into the Wii counterparts.
However, if players now try to log on to play CoD on Nintendo, they are hit with messages saying, "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service for this software has been discontinued."
This goes for titles such as Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare 3, and Black Ops.
Other players have been left with more heartwarming messages, with thanks for their loyalty to the console, but either way, the servers are now offline.
Nintendo fans mourn the Call of Duty franchise
With the news that the Nintendo servers have been shut down, many fans went on social media to say, "RIP CoD on Wii".
"Damn I remember playing WaW on the Wii, it was so hard to play but so fun at the same time," another fan said.
The good news is that this is definitely not the last we're to hear of Nintendo consoles having Call of Duty games, as the decade-long commitment to each other has only just begun, hinting towards some titles being designed for Switch.
The potential Switch port has been criticised in recent weeks though, with government bodies finding that the console doesn't have the power to house the modern-day CoD experience, meaning it might be better-served to have the same game as CoD Mobile / Warzone Mobile instead. At least they'd get Verdansk then.
The future of Nintendo and CoD is still to be discovered, but for now, you'll have to wait in silence, without the possibility of whipping out the nunchucks again.
Update August 3: Activision has released the following statement about Call of Duty games on Nintendo. "The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, which provides certain online functionality for many Wii, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo DSi software titles, was discontinued."
