We're shaken and stirred, as one GoldenEye 007 superfan has built the 1997 classic inside Far Cry 5. Although there were 21 years between the two titles, Far Cry 5's impressive level editor means Rare's James Bond shooter has been given a much-needed facelift.
Over the years, we've seen various GoldenEye 007 returns, with the most famous being the 2010 reimagining for the Nintendo Wii. Elsewhere, Microsoft had been working on an Xbox Live Arcade version in 2008, before rights issues led to the GoldenEye 007 HD remake being cancelled. While we hold out hope for a proper next-gen remake, a Far Cry 5 player has done the work for us.
What is the GoldenEye 007 remake in Far Cry 5?
YouTuber Krollywood has been showing off their GoldenEye 007 remake in all its glory. The project reportedly took 1,400 hours and has been in the works for years. Every level from Dam through to Cradle is lovingly recreated, however, Krollywood admits they haven't added the bonus levels that were available after the main campaign.
Better yet, Krollywood hid some sneaky Easter eggs in their faithful remake, with eagle-eyed gamers able to spot the N64 logo hidden in the Dam level. If you want to play GoldenEye 007 in Far Cry 5, head into Arcade Mode and search for Krollywood's PSN name - which is the apt "Perfect-Dark1982". Those up on their video game history will know Perfect Dark was Rare's spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007.
Will the GoldenEye 007 remake in Far Cry 5 lead to a sequel?
When Krollywood shared their work on Reddit, the post soon blew up. Showing off screenshots, it's hard to argue that the textures don't look beautiful. There's clearly a lot of work that's gone into this one - with an end result that even Rare would be proud of.
Safe to say, people couldn't get enough of this fan project. One wrote, "I honestly think I will buy FC5 to play this lol, it looks incredible", while another added, "Great job OP - my all-time memory of the N64. (never really liked Mario&stuff...) And now try to imagine this in PSVR."
A third said, "This is incredible work. You also get bonus points for taking the N64 comparison shots on a small cathode-ray TV like the one I played games on from 1989-2001. *sigh* Simpler times."
Speaking to Kotaku, Krollywood explained how this labour of love might be a one-off. When asked if they'll be building more classic titles in Far Cry 5, they told the site, "Not at the moment. I want to play other games, too!”
Even if Krollywood seems wiped out by the epic task of rebuilding GoldenEye 007, here's hoping they put Perfect Dark in their crosshairs or spark an actual GoldenEye 007 remake.
