Thankfully the console wars have softened over the years, with an uneasy peace forming - but recent big-money moves threaten to re-ignite this cold war.

Now that Xbox has signed on to purchase Activision Blizzard, the monopolisation of the industry has amped up tenfold, laying the groundwork for an industry that is operated on a who-owns-who basis - and with the Game Pass in tow too, it leaves PlayStation a little out in the cold.

Sony is scrambling to catch up, with Project Spartacus and the purchase of Bungie serving as their attempts to get back - but it's not looking good.

And to make matters worse, analysts aren't predicting a strong future for the company either.

Analyst Suggests That PlayStation Could Be On The Way Out

Ah. That's not good news.

According to a respected analyst, PlayStation is likely to see have some challenges over the next decade or so, and we shouldn't expect that the company as we know it will be around in ten years' time.

On the Real Deal Xbox podcast, the industry analyst Michael Pachter has been forthright with his suggestion that PlayStation is on its way out.

"I think PlayStation is doomed and I think they are going to cease to exist as we know them in about 10 years," he says. "They can't compete, they have no chance of competing." Bleak.

Is PlayStation Really About To Fail?

There's no real telling how the industry will look in ten years' time, but this may be a tad dramatic.

PlayStation's immediate finances are completely fine as supported by Sony and the prospective new film and TV franchises based on their properties are likely going to make a lot of money. PlayStation's current standing in the industry is one that pushes forward single-player experiences and big narratives - and as long as they don't completely tank in popularity in the next few years, it's safe to say that the company isn't going anywhere.

And it is not like Sony aren't in the business of acquiring the right business themselves, with their deal to bring Destiny 2 maker, Bungie, proving the Japanese company is willing to splash the cash for talent.

Though the industry might be a little on edge at the moment, it doesn't seem like we have to be worried about where our favourite companies are going. After all, if PlayStation starts to tank, Xbox can just buy them at this stage. Easy.
