More often than not, preserving video game history takes a backseat, and boy is it depressing. The focus of developers is so heavily laid on moving into the future and creating more immersive and exciting gaming experiences, that we forget to shine a light on the games that put us in this position in the first place.

In many cases, these iconic games deserve much more attention than we give them. For most classic titles, we have to rely on third parties putting them in the glass cases they deserve to be. And now, four new games are getting some serious credit as they're inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame.

The Video Game Hall of Fame announces its 2023 inductees

Four new titles have been inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame by the National Museum of Play, and a couple of them are some truly modern classics.

A new tweet from the National Museum of Play has confirmed that Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, Wii Sports, Digital Domain's Barbie Fashion Designer, and Syzygy Engineering's Computer Space will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

They're all worthy additions, which have beaten out the likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Quake and Angry Birds for their place. This comes after Sid Meier's Civilization, Ms. Pac-Man, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time joined last year.

Why Barbie and Computer Space?

It's clear to see why The Last of Us and Wii Sports have earned their accolades, but those who weren't around for the launch of the other two titles might be confused by their appearance - but they're just as welcome.

According to the Museum of Play website, the team decided that Barbie Fashion Designer deserved its induction for proving that video games aimed at girls could succeed, while Computer Space has earned its spot for proving successful and innovative in a landscape that didn't accommodate video games back in the 1970s.

These four deserve even more respect for landing in the Hall of Fame - and we're delighted that love for the history of video games is still rife. Someone tell Nintendo that we want to play classic games.
