Forget Left 4 Dead, Back 4 Blood sequel teased by Turtle Rock

Turtle Rock Studios is seemingly hiring for a Back 4 Blood sequel, as our hopes for Left 4 Dead 3 die and the zombie co-op genre moves elsewhere.

Hey, remember Back 4 Blood, the spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead that also tried to take a bite out of the zombie genre? Keen to capitalise on the success of the first game, it looks like a Back 4 Blood sequel is on the way from Turtle Rock Studios.

Founded in 2002, Turtle Rock Studios was known for its work on the early Counter-Strike games and assisting on the Left 4 Dead series. Filling that Left 4 Dead-shaped hole in our lives, Back 4 Blood released in 2021 as something of a continuation and ended up being one of Warner Bros.' fastest-selling original IPs.

While most of us would probably rather see Left 4 Dead 3, Back 4 Blood 2 is the next best thing. We already knew Turtle Rock was working on a new game, with the team confirming it was stopping updates for Back 4 Blood earlier this year. It was a short lifespan but has us eagerly looking to what comes next.

The death of Back 4 Blood giving life to Back 4 Blood 2 would be an ironic twist of fate, but it looks increasingly likely. Very Ali Gaming pointed out how Turtle Rock is currently looking for a Senior Combat Designer, with ideal experience listing  "combat/weapons," "class design," "skills," and "boss encounters."

All of this is standard Back 4 Blood fodder. If you still aren't convinced, there are mentions of "mission layouts," "FPS, Co-op, and Multiplayer games," and "first-person shooting and melee" all fit the brief of Back 4 Blood 2. With mentions of experience with Unreal Engine 5 and Blueprint, it sounds like a truly new-gen game.

What happened to Left 4 Dead 3?

While it's possible Turtle Rock is working on yet another completely new IP, Back 4 Blood 2 (or how about Back 4 Bloodier?) is the most obvious option - especially the first game has now been put down. Still, many will be asking what happened to those whispers of Left 4 Dead 3.

A March 2023 leak from Valve hinted at Left 4 Dead 3, but it's now to thought to be just leftover code. Despite the consistent rumours of a threequel, Former Valve Valve writer Chet Faliszek debunked the idea of the third game. Even if Left 4 Dead 3 is 'dead,' another Back 4 Blood could keep the juices flowing.
