Esports World Cup enters partnership agreement with Sony
The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) and Sony Group Corporation have entered into a partnership for the Esports World Cup, which will be held this summer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
This collaboration aims to utilize Sony's technology and entertainment resources to produce deliverables and assist in the production of some parts of the event.
Collaboration details
Under this partnership, Sony Pictures Entertainment will produce a documentary series that provides insights into the players and games involved in the Esports World Cup. According to a press release, Sony is also exploring ways to support creators and talent within the region.
Furthermore, Sony Music Entertainment is set to create the official anthem for the Esports World Cup 2024. More specifics on the respective projects are currently not known. Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, highlighted the partnership's role in aiming to develop a global platform for esports.
Toshimoto Mitomo, Executive Deputy President and CSO of Sony Group Corporation noted Sony's intent to leverage its businesses to upgrade the esports experience for a global audience.
"Sony has been enhancing the esports experience especially with Sony Interactive Entertainment's initiatives such as PlayStation Tournaments and the annual EVO fighting game series." shared Mitomo. So far, no titles that have been developed by Sony or one of its subsidiaries have been announced as participating games at the Esports World Cup.
Event overview
The Esports World Cup represents a significant event in competitive gaming, said to feature top esports organisations competing in Riyadh during the Summer month, though no definitive dates have been shared yet. Games like PUBG Mobile had announced a multiyear agreement with the EWC, indicating an annual structure for the event.
Ten different titles ranging from FPS games like Fortnite, Overwatch, PUBG and Rainbow Six Siege to mobile titles such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Honor of Kings have been announced, with further titles being expected to be shared soon.
While indicating a competition of national teams facing off against each other by its name, the Esports World Cup pits participating esports organisations against one another to compete across its various titles.
Adding to an overall summation of results from the event, the EWC seeks to find the best-performing esports organisation. Much like other details on the event, the scoring system for the event between the different esports has not been shared yet.
