Elite: Dangerous has always been ambitious, but as it approaches its tenth anniversary later this year, developer Frontier Developments has stepped up its efforts to amaze its player base.

Elite: Dangerous introduced the Thargoids years ago, and the spooky alien force has been growing more and more aggressive in time since, culminating in the arrival of enormous capital ships called Titans. Now, the game's Update 18 has rolled out a new weapon with which players have been able to start hunting the huge ships - and they've chalked up their first kill.

Elite: Dangerous players killed their first Thargoid Titan

Update 18, aptly named Kill The Titans, has rolled out and brings with it a new weapon called the Guardian Nanite Torpedo Pylons.

It's not the catchiest title, but as you'll see from the Twitch clip below, they're certainly effective.

The fallen Titan, known as Taranis, was destroyed and has made the area around it too hazardous to enter. It took a weeklong battle to destroy all of its eight 'hearts', and players that logged in to tackle it will be rewarded with 400 Arx, an in-game currency.

If you're feeling a little disappointed you didn't take part in the grand battle (which ended on Saturday), don't be. There are another seven Titans strewn across the galaxy, and each offers 400 Arx.

Frontier Developments has confirmed you'll get 100 Arx per Titan heart you work to destroy, but you'll get more Arx (up to 400 per heart) by being in the higher percentile of damage dealers.

It's also easier to get involved now. Frontier Developments' blog explains that Tech Broker requirements for the Shutdown Neutraliser and Caustic Sink Launcher have been removed.

As someone who's been playing Elite: Dangerous on and off since it debuted back on the Xbox One, I think I'll be digging out my flight stick to join the collective effort to protect the galaxy.
