Oh come on FromSoftware, give us a break. You’ve been playing Elden Ring for 100+ hours and you’re still no closer to saving the Lands Between or besting the Elden Lord. Still, you’ve got a healthy stack of runes and are heading to the next Site of Grace to level up. All seems well, then bam, a dog kills you. Yes, a dog.

Man's best friend isn’t quite the wet-nosed and waggy-tailed version you'd want around the house, with Elden Ring's blood dogs being more like the zombified ones we see in the Resident Evil movies. Literally everything in Elden Ring wants to kill you, and if it's not poison swamps or Jumanji-inspired plants, it’s a rogue ram trying to run you down. Now, it turns out you can be one-hit by a blood dog.

What's The Deal With Elden Ring's Blood Dogs?

Your average Rotten Stray can easily be taken out - even when they roam around in large packs. However, you need to look out for the blood dogs found at Altus Plateau's Writheblood Ruins. This variant has a bleed effect that can stack up and leave your Tarnished in the ground before they know what’s hit/bit them.

In a new video, Zuille the Witch explains why the blood dog is one of Elden Ring's most OP additions. Delving into the data files, it turns out the blood dog is currently bugged with over 11,000 damage points in a single attack animation. Breaking down the numbers, that’s around five times your health at 99 vigor. Worse than this, the criminally hard Starscourge Radahn deals around 1,000 damage with even his most lethal attack. So, imagine taking on 11 Radahn’s at once. We shudder at the thought.

Every enemy has an ID file that comes with an assigned animation behaviour file. Even though both the small and large dogs share the same animation file, the small dog data is correctly registered as one hit. However, it’s when a small dog uses a lunge attack, the system resets the player check and causes the big dog to hit you over and over again in a single frame. If that wasn’t enough, the above data only takes into account the base hit and doesn’t include the bleed effect. All of this means blood dogs make Malenia's Waterfowl Dance feel like a tap from a Rabbitgaroo.

Is Elden Ring Too Hard?

Without turning this into a warzone, there are sure to be those that claim Elden Ring is simply too hard. It's definitely living up to its promise of being the hardest FromSoft game ever made, and remembering the developer gave us Bloodborne, that's quite an achievement. Even Game Director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has apologised for its gruelling difficulty, but what else would you expect? Although there are mods to add an easy mode, most class it as cheating.

Namely, you just need to keep your wits about you in Elden Ring. If it isn't birds carrying swords, it's wolves shooting arrows. Clearly, the blood dog issue is just a glitch and will likely be patched out. We've already seen FromSoftware roll out a hefty update that fixed bugs across the board, so we don't imagine these jacked blood dogs will be along for much longer. In the meantime, we suggest you avoid this powerful pack or put on your powerful mech build.
