Ea Restored Classics Road Rash

EA has re-released a big batch of its classic PC games for modern systems, including Road Rash, Wing Commander, Ultima and Theme Hospital, and they're all half price until November 19.

The games went live on Steam and GOG on November 5 as part of what EA is calling its Restored Classic Sale, and VGC reports they're on the EA app too, with the Ultima and Wing Commander games also available in bundles at 55% off.

Road Rash is back, chains and all

The headline act is Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition, which according to its Steam page is the first ever digital release of the 1996 PC version of EA's combat racer, where you batter rival bikers off the road while trying to outrun the police. It's been restored with a fully relicensed soundtrack featuring Soundgarden, Monster Magnet and Therapy?, full-motion video scenes rebuilt from the original master tapes EA found in its vault in 2022, and up to 60fps, controller support, windowed mode and cloud saves.

It normally costs £8.99 on Steam in the UK and is down to £4.49 until November 19, which is roughly what you'd have paid for a second-hand copy at a car boot sale in 1998, and early Steam reviews are Very Positive.

Every EA classic in the Restored Classic Sale

  • Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander: 35th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi: 35th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander Prophecy: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander: Privateer and Privateer 2: The Darkening
  • Wing Commander: Academy and Wing Commander: Armada
  • Strike Commander
  • Crusader: No Remorse and Crusader: No Regret
  • Ultima I to Ultima IX, including Ultima VII: The Complete Edition and Ultima VIII: Gold Edition
  • Ultima Underworld I and II
  • Theme Hospital

VGC says seven of the games are full restoration projects that needed extra work to run properly on modern PCs, and that popular community mods have been built into the official releases, so you shouldn't need to go digging through old forums to get them working.

Well, it's been a long ride, but Road Rash is finally back on the road.
